Long before the United Arab Emirates got into the happiness game, Bhutan made contentedness a national priority. In 1972, the Himalayan kingdom created a Gross National Happiness Index to rival the gross national product as an indicator of economic development based on Buddhist principles. The country consolidated the committees overseeing happiness in 2008 to create the Gross National Happiness Commission and a new job, secretary of gross national happiness.
